In order to visualize and determine the active site on the gold nanoparticulate catalyst, in-situ TEM observation of Au/TiO2 specimen during propene epoxidation has been done with our dedicated environmental TEM (ETEM). Since the catalytic reaction product, the propene oxide (PO), keep liquid form if surrounding pressure is controlled to be more than its vapor pressure (5×104 Pa @RT), the TEM can then visualize the place where the liquid PO were produced. As a result, in-situ observations clearly revealed that the PO molecules were formed at the perimeter of Au/TiO2 interface. This indicates that the active site where the reaction occurs was successfully defined.
