The timing jitter in a gain-switched multimode semiconductor laser is smaller than that in a gain-switched single-mode semiconductor laser. By the rate-equations approach, the suppression of timing jitter has been interpreted to be caused by shortening pulse turn-on time. In contrast, we treated this problem using the rate-equations including a form of semiconductor gain. As a result, it is found that the suppression of timing jitter results from a random distribution of amplitudes of Langevin noise among multi-modes.
