我々はEuイオンの4f殻内遷移による赤色発光に着目し、Eu添加GaN (GaN:Eu)を活性層とする赤色LEDから実用化レベルの光出力を得ることを目指して研究を進めている。赤色発光の発光強度増大にはGaN母体からEuイオンへのエネルギー輸送効率の増大が重要な要素である。そのためには、エネルギー輸送プロセスの理解が必要である。
