Thermal emission is the product of the emittance of the surface and the perfect blackbody radiation. The emittance is equivalent to the absorptance. Therefore, a surface with an absorptance modified by surface microstructures exhibits a controlled thermal emission when heated. In this talk, thermal emission from various nanophotonic structures are reviewed and typical application is introduced.
