Cu2O is a promising material as a photocathode to produce H2 from water under visible-light. However, the self-reduction by photoexcited electrons is a serious problem, resulting in the decline of photcatalytic performance. Before now, we cleared that the composite of a crystalline TiO2 layer on the Cu2O photocathode using excimer laser assisted metal organic deposition (ELAMOD) was an effective method to prevent the self-reducction. However, improvement of the crystallinity of TiO2 is required to raise the photocatalytic performance. In this work, we examined the effect of ambient atmosphere on the TiO2/Cu2O photocathode prepared by the ELAMOD process.
