We performed drilling of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) with a cylindrically polarized pulsed CO2 laser. We observed an anomalous enhancement of drilling performance solely in the azimuthal polarization. To see the reason for the observed phenomenon, we took the shot-by-shot SEM images of the drilled holes for each polarization. While the hole irradiated by the azimuthally polarized beam gets deeper and deeper, that of the radially polarized beam gets wider rather than deeper. It has been presumed that the electric field of the radially polarized beam coupled better with the end of the truncated fiber, since the electric field of the radial polarization runs parallel to the fiber thread and that worked like antennas.
