We investigate the photoluminescence properties of micrometer-sized ZnO particles in the temperature range from 3 to 300 K. We found that the exciton-exciton inelastic scattering is dominant in the temperature region below 100 K. As the temperature is increased above 150 K, the exciton-electron scattering begins to take place. This exciton-electron scattering is responsible for the stimulated emission at room temperature.
