[19a-P2-22] Selective Adsorption of Cyanobiphenyl Liquid Crystals Having Different Length of Alkyl Chain

A solid-like interfacial layer can be formed between a polymer sublayer and a liquid crystal. These phenomena have been confirmed by the analysis of the viscoelastic properties in the vicinity of the interface using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). In this study the adsorption of liquid crystal molecules on polyimide (PI) alignment film non-rubbed and rubbed parallel to the shearing direction of the QCM was investigated by observing the formation of the interfacial layer when 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) and 4-cyano-4'-heptylbiphenyl (7CB) were dropped sequentially on the QCM in a different order. The results indicated that 5CB was preferentially adsorbed on the non-rubbed PI, i.e., the adsorption of liquid crystalline molecules on substrate was strongly dependent on the length of alkyl chain. On the other hand, the selective absorption wasn’t observed on the rubbed PI.
