We developed scanning thermal noise microscopy (STNM) that allows us to measure the resonance spectrum of the cantilever at each point while the tip is scanned on the sample. The STNM allows us to eliminate the spurious responses due to the excitation system and to reduce nonlinear vibrations by minimizing the oscillation amplitude. In this study, we employed the STNM for studying the contact resonance spectrum on a sample with subsurface features to elucidate the mechanisms of the subsurface structure visualization.
