Graphene is one of the two dimensional materials and expected to have proton permeability. In this study, we evaluated proton permeability of monolayer graphene grown on Au(111) electrode by electrochemical technique. Highly crystalline monolayer graphene grown on Au(111) (G/Au(111)) was prepared by atmospheric chemical vapor deposition. The CV profile of G/Au(111) at high positive potential region showed that the oxidation and reduction currents arising from the underlying Au(111) was almost suppressed, indicating efficient block of water molecules to the underlying Au surface by covering graphene layer. On the other hand, in negative potential region, cathodic current arising from hydrogen evolution reaction was observed. The result strongly indicates that the protons can access underlying Au surface through the the graphene, resulting in the HER.
