We have analyzed a thermal reduction process of graphene oxide (GO) deposited on a Pt(111) surface by means of photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We found that an interface-limited reduction proceeds during the thermal annealing, which results in formation of stable graphene monolayer only at the interface between GO and Pt. Removal of the residual GO on the deoxidized graphene monolayer has achieved via successive thermal decomposition, which enables the formation monolayer graphene on the metal surface with this technique.
