Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), graphene sheets smaller than 100 nm, have attracted significant attention to the application for optoelectronic materials and bio-imaging because of their luminescence the presence of a number of hydrophilic functionalities such as hydroxy, epoxy, and carboxy groups on their edge sites and basal surface. Carboxy groups can be converted to aryl groups by decarboxylative coupling with transition metal catalysts. Here, we report introduction of various aryl groups to GQDs. These arylated GQDs exhibited sufficient solubility in common organic solvents such as chloroform and acetone. In addition, the introduced aryl substituents affected their luminescence properties.
