[5p-PA2-7] Scanning Wave Photo-Polymerization Generates a Molecular Alignment Layer for Liquid Crystals
Keywords:Photo-polymerization, Molecular alignment, Alignment layer
Two-dimensional control of molecular orientation in liquid crystal polymer films enables one to develop applications in electronics, photonics, soft robotics and etc. Even by the most sophisticated method of photoalignment using polarized light, the control of microscopic molecular orientation having complex manner over large areas remains a challenge. To circumvent the critical issue, we have recently proposed a novel method to optically control molecular orientation where photo-polymerization of monomers by using non-polarized light having spatial gradient of light intensity directs molecular diffusion to align mesogens along the light intensity gradient. In this study, we investigated an ability of the aligned polymer film as an alignment layer for liquid crystals.
