In this study, the impact of wafer thickness on the optical and electrical properties in c-Si solar cells are characterized using a series of Si wafers with thicknesses from 50 to 400 microns. Light absorption in very thin c-Si cells are characterized using SiNX/c-Si/SiNX test structures. It is confirmed that the light absorption within the thin c-Si cells can be enhanced close to the Lambertian limit. The impact of the wafer thickness on the electrical properties are experimentally evaluated by measuring the implied VOC using (i)a-Si:H/c-Si/(i)a-Si:H test structures. a-Si:H/c-Si:H SHJ solar cells with very thin wafers are also fabricated and characterized. The potential of very thin SHJ solar cells are discussed.
