Few-cycle laser pulses can produce periodic nanostructures on diamond-like carbon (DLC) films through ablation, because they have high peak power even if we use the output from the laser oscillator. However, the formation process is still unknown in detail. In this study, we have made ablation experiments of the DLC films with 7 fs and 70 fs laser pulses from the Ti:sapphire laser oscillators, and have investigated peak power density dependence of the periodic nanostructure formation process. The experimental results obtained show that the nanostructures formed with the 7 fs laser pulses is clearer than that with the 70 fs laser pulses. This result indicates that the laser pulses with higher peak power density dominantly induce surface plasmon polaritons and near-fields, and more clearly produce the nanostructures on the surface.
