[8a-PB4-20] Bonding Strength of PTFE Treated by Plasma-Graft Polymerization

We investigated the improvement of adhesion of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is one of the poorly adhesive materials, using the atmospheric pressure nonthermal plasma (NTP) graft polymerization of acrylic acid monomer. The atmospheric pressure NTP graft polymerization process is a lower-environmental-impact than the sodium ammonia process which is conventionally used. We evaluated the bonding strength of treated PTFE films by 90o peeling test using a stainless steel plate and double sided tape. Then, we investigated the effect of the treatment condition such as moving velocity of a plasma torch on the bonding strength and decided the optimal condition. In addition, we conducted scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement demonstrate that the graft-polymerization layer of acrylic acid is formed on the surface of PTFE films.
