Au nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully formed on poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) nanowires (NWs), which were fabricated by the single particle nanofabrication technique, by photoreduction in HAuCl4-containing MeOH solutions. Au NPs were preferentially formed on PVP and PNIPAM NWs because the three-dimensional (3D) crosslinked networks inside the gel NWs promoted the formation of Au NPs. The particle size and number density of the Au NPs were controlled by reduction time. Hybrids of Au NPs and PVP NWs exhibited visible absorption based on the localized surface plasmon resonance of Au NPs, which was slightly red-shifted with increasing particle size and number density.
