[16p-F204-6] [INVITED] Silicon Photonics and Photonic Crystals

Toshihiko Baba1 (1.Yokohama Nat'l Univ.)

Keywords:silicon photonics, photonic crystal, slow light

Silicon photonics and photonic crystals have emerged in 1980s and rapidly evolved around 2000. The former has achieved the commercialization in these ten years by exploiting CMOS fab, but its performance almost reaches its peak. Nowadays, the latter is also fabricated by the CMOS fab, and its slow light effect has the potential of breaking the limit of the silicon photonics. This talk presents recent advancement in slow-light-based silicon modulators, correlators, beam scanners, and so on as candidates toward the practical use.
