[16p-P3-3] Effects of hydrogen content on anti-fouling properties of DLC

Water stains are formed by silica in tap water, which is a problem in the kitchen and bathrooms. It is known that water stains combine with hydroxyl groups on substrate surfaces. It has been reported that an excellent cleaning property is achieved by decreasing of the amount of hydroxyl groups on the substrates. In this study, DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) was deposited on a glass substrate with many surface hydroxyl groups to improve the cleaning property. Owing to excellent mechanical properties such as low friction and low wear, DLC is widely used in various fields. We studied to clarify the structure of DLC film with the excellent cleaning property of water stains. As a result, the water scale on the glass substrate was not removed, whereas the water scale on the DLC film was removable. Comparison of DLC with different hydrogen content showed that initial cleaning property of DLC film was equivalent. However, the DLC film immersed in water showed the lower cleaning property in case of smaller hydrogen content. The X ray photoelectron spectroscopy – chemical derivatization method indicated that the concentration of the surface hydroxyl group was increased. This results suggests that the cleaning property of the water scale was deteriorated because of the hydroxyl group was combined with the water scale. In conclusion, it was revealed that DLC containing a large amount of hydrogen is effective against water stain contamination which is a problem in products around water.
