Soft materials have attracted much attention for various kinds of applications. Precisely controlled molecular alignment in polymer films enables to generate unique functionalities in mechanical, optical or electrical properties. Recently, we have proposed a novel method to control alignment via photopolymerization of monomers. In this process, molecular alignment is induced by molecular diffusion between irradiated and unirradiated regions. In this study, we directly fabricated polymer films having precise molecular alignment in one- or two-dimensions. We analyzed the alignment of mesogenic molecules and polymer main chains induced by photopolymerization aiming to elucidate the alignment process.
