Recently, we proposed a concept of nonequilibrium solar cell "heat recovery (HERC) solar cell" whose theoretical efficiency limit can exceed the detailed-balance limit. HERC solar cell requires an absorber with the lattice temperature higher than those in the electrodes. As a result, it does not require fast carrier extraction within the thermalization time and thus can be realized in Si solar cell. This is a great advantage over conventional hot-carrier solar cells. In this presentation, we present our newly developed understanding of the energy-coversion mechanisms and give a clear answer to a question of why HERC solar cell exhibits positive temperature characteristics in contrast with conventional solar cells.
