We will give a talk on the emission properties of defects in silica in view of versatility, universality and novelty. In particular, emphasis is given to the following topics: (i) structural origin of the blue emission centers at the surface of silica particles and (ii) new emissioin properties of two-fold coordinated Si and Ge centers in silica glass.
