We present a confocal fluorescence microscope that surpasses the highest possible frame rate constrained only by the fluorescence lifetime of fluorophores, which is enabled by telecommunication technologies such as frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). We implemented the FDM and QAM using an interferometer with acousto-optic modulators and polarization optical components. To show its broad utility, we demonstrated 3D volumetric confocal fluorescence microscopy of cellular dynamics at 104 volumes/s and high-throughput imaging flow cytometry.
