Metamaterials are greatly advantageous in varieties of technology oriented devices that can be operated in a wide range of electromagnetic spectrum, depending on the dimensional features of meta-atom. Some of the notable examples of such applications would include absorbers, filters, super-lenses, cloaks and antennas. In sensing technology, thermal sensors constitute one of the prime areas of research focus. In this stream, vanadium dioxide (VO2) material is highly attractive owing to its phase-changing property. The use of VO2 in different forms has been reported before. This communication, however, says of nanoengineered VO2 medium-based metasurface, that can be exploited for temperature sensing. The investigation incorporates FDTD simulation results for normal and oblique incidence of the TM-polarized waves, emphasizing the reflection characteristics. The effect of incidence angle on the spectral characteristics has been observed. The large value of angle yields almost vanishing reflection. The reflection minima exhibit shifts with changing temperature – the feature that may be utilized in constructing thermal sensor.
