Keywords:corneal stroma, collagen fiber, nanostructure

The nanostructure of the collagen fiber is very important to the corneal stroma. It influences the optical properties and transparency of the cornea. We used the finite-difference time-domain method to study numerically the various nanostructures of the stroma. We investigated the effects of collagen structure on the transparency under different thickness conditions and compare the simulation results of the transmittance of two thin-film models without nanostructure. For the results of the thin-film model without nanostructures, the transmittances of the filler case and fiber case are 97% and 96%, respectively. The simulation results for the case with nanostructures show that the transmittance is 85% which is close to the transmittance of the real cornea. Further study of the effects of nanostructures on optical property of the stroma can be useful to design the artificial cornea.
