The high transmembrane resistance and amphiphilicity are both attractive properties of lipid bilayer. In this work, a doped free-standing lipid bilayer was formed by using phospholipids and photo-sensitive molecule [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in a micro-fabricated aperture of Si chip. When the PCBM-doped free-standing lipid bilayer was illuminated with 850 nm infrared light, the transmembrane current shifted. It was found that the current shift was modulated by alternating voltage bias parallel with lipid bilayer, which was applied through two electrodes embedded in Si chip. Therefore, this Si-chip based lipid bilayer system can serve as a promising photo-sensitive bio-transistor.
