The solid-liquid interface is central to electrochemical (EC) processes including electrocatalysis, electrodeposition and corrosion. Here, we utilize ferrocene-terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (Fc SAMs) as a model EC interface. We investigate the redox-dependent electronic and structural changes utilizing X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy setup combined with an EC cell (EC-XPS/UPS). EC is performed in a cell is inside a dedicated EC chamber under Ar which can be evacuated, permitting transfer to XPS/UPS. Using this setup, we control the ferrocene/ferrocenium (Fc/Fc+) redox state and spectroscopically probe the redox-induced electronic and structural changes. We probe changes to the Fc/Fc+ redox center, formation of Fc+-anion ion pairs, SAM orientation, monolayer thickness and work function. The approach used here is useful for a wide range of redox-responsive systems to understand structure-behavior relationships.
