Strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at the interfaces between MgO and Fe has been developed. Orbital moment anisotropy is one of the candidates in the origin of PMA. In this presentation, we discuss the quadrupole moments at the Fe/MgO interface through the interfacial strain by x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). We succeeded in the measurements of XMLD for PMA interfaces, which deduces the interfacial quadrupole moment at Fe/MgO. We found that orbital moment anisotropy can be a main factor for PMA with the small contribution of quadrupoles.
