△ [19a-E317-5] Single-Crystal ZnO Nanowire Discriminates the Regioisomers of Linear Aliphatic Ketones to Promote Molecular Selective Auto-oxidation

We demonstrate a characteristic oxidation ability of ZnO single-crystal nanowire surface to aliphatic ketones. We found that aliphatic normal ketones (C7, C9, and C11) adsorbed on ZnO nanowire surface were immediately converted to carboxylic acids with C—C bond cleavage. Formation of their COO structures was confirmed by FT-IR measurements for the ketone-adsorbed ZnO nanowires. GC-MS chromatograms for the desorbed gas from the ketone-adsorbed surface also showed the formation of aliphatic carboxylic acids. Furthermore, we also found that the reaction degree of the oxidation was strongly depend on the position of the carbonyl group. The reaction was quite slow for 2-ketones or symmetric ketones compared with other ketones. This finding is the first example that an inorganic bulk solid recognizes a functional group position in an aliphatic linear chain, resulting to selective oxidative bond-cleavage.
