In this work, we report, for the first time, the electronic structure of water molecules in the vicinity of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). From XE spectra, we evaluate the electronic structure of the interfacial water and discuss its relevance to bioinertness.
