Methane is a promising molecule as a raw material for obtaining useful chemical products, and the oxidation reaction that cuts the very stable C-H bond is a crucial step. Oxides of transition metals such as iridium are known to possess such a hydrocarbon oxidation activity. In this study, an atomically thin film of IrO2 nanosheets was employed as the sensing layer to monitor surface chemical reactions, and we succeeded in electrically monitoring the methane oxidation, which has not been achieved so far due to a masking effect of the high electrical conductivity of bulk IrO2 crystals.
