▲ [20a-E317-2] Pulsed discharging of compacted B powder for B nanoparticle preparation
Keywords:B nanoparticles, Pulsed wire discharge
Pulsed wire discharge is a physical vapor method for preparing nanoparticles. In this method, a thin metallic wire is vaporized by a large pulsed current and rapidly quenched in ambient gas/liquid to form nanoparticles. Because of the necessity of wire, some materials such as silicon, boron, etc are difficult to draw wire so it was a challenge for PWD to prepare such materials. Recently, by discharging through a thin Al wire penetrating a heat-shrinkable tube filled with Si micron powder, it was able to prepare Si nanoparticles [1]. By using this method, efforts to prepare B nanoparticles were done using Al, Zr, Mo, and W wires. Experimental apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Either compacted powder in a heat-shrinkable tube with Al, Zr, Mo, W wires or Ti, Fe, Cu rods was used for raw materials. The capacitors were charged at 6.2 kV and discharged in Ar gas at 100 kPa. By compressing B powder with a pair of Ti, Fe, and Cu rods and discharging, B nanoparticles were successfully prepared with Cu rods. With Ti rods, discharge was unable to occur and with Fe rods, a large amount of compounds of Fe and B were formed. From XRD pattern in Fig. 2, by using B micron powder as a raw material and Cu rods for compressing, B nanoparticles were successfully prepared
