We have investigated causality between the optical dissymmetry and the structural “chirality” of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) adsorbed on the Ag(111) surface by utilizing STM-based tip-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (STM-TERS). Circularly-polarized light irradiated the SWNTs and information about Raman optical activity (ROA) was detected with obtaining high resolution STM images on each SWNT. We first associated the optical activity of chiral-type SWNT with its atomic structure (right-handed or left-handed chiral structure). Our approach is quite promising to investigate the optical properties and optical dissymmetry of individual chiral molecules or chiral nano-systems.
