[20p-E207-7] Theoretical Analysis of the Effect of Back Reflection on the Resonant Properties of a Photonic Crystal Laser

The photonic crystal laser is a bright semiconductor laser anticipated as a light source for many next-generation applications. The maximum achievable laser brightness can be increased by weakening the effect of distributed optical feedback within the photonic crystal resonator of the laser. This feedback is weakened by tuning the resonant properties of the laser such that its resonant light waves that diffract one- and two-dimensionally completely destructive interfere with each other. Here, we combine three-dimensional coupled-wave theory and the transfer-matrix method to perform a rigorous theoretical analysis of the dependence of these properties on back reflection, which recently has been incorporated in the design of the photonic crystal laser for the purpose of improving its slope efficiency. We reveal that this dependence is non-negligible and thus must be duly considered in the design of high-brightness photonic crystal lasers in the future.
