The flexoelectric (FE) effect has received much attention in the LCD industry because it affects LCD’s response speed and display quality, but the effect in a liquid crystal with a helical structure is also fascinating. For example, since the blue phase where the double twisted cylinder forms a three-dimensional lattice also has a helical structure inside, the FE effect is inevitably induced. In this report, the flexoelectric polarization induced by applying electric field to various liquid crystals was visualized by SHG microscopy. The liquid crystals evaluated include p-type and n-type nematic liquid crystals, and furthermore, blue phase liquid crystals without polymer stabilization. The flexoelectric polarization observed in the n-type nematic liquid crystal was compared with the simulation result.
