When the macroscopic inversion symmetry of the system is broken, the Pockels effect, which is the second-order nonlinear optical effect, occurs. However, contrary to the principle of nonlinear optics, we discovered that the Pockels effect also occurs in bulk water with inversion symmetry. Observed signal is very small, but the elucidated mechanism shows the possibility of water as EO material. We will report a new method to increase the Pockels signal in bulk water.
