Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are attracting much attention as radiation sensitizers. In this study, Au NP-incorporated polymer nanogels were prepared as novel radiation sensitizers by seeded precipitation polymerization, and radiation sensitizing effects were investigated in vivo using nude mice bearing pancreatic cancer. Tumor sizes of mice injecting Au NP-incorporated nanogels were smaller than those of control mice when X-ray was irradiated. Furthermore, negligible body weight loss in the both, indicating that the Au NPs-incorporated polymer nanogels possess low toxicity. Consequently, they can be used as radiation sensitizers in cancer radiation therapy.
