In this research, we optimize the structure of grating coupler on a standard SOI structure without any reflector by means of CMA-ES, one of evolutionary computation. The coupling efficiency at 1550 nm of the optimum structure is 74%, which is the highest value reported under the design constraints of this study. We demonstrate the usefulness of automatic design by evolutionary computation, which does not require physical consideration by designers.
