エルビウムドープ光ファイバー増幅器の励起用光源として発振波長0.98µmの半導体レーザーが用いられている．この半導体レーザーは，単一横モード動作とキンクフリー動作を維持したうえで，低発振しきい電流，高い光出力が求められている．これらを実現することを目的として，メサ両脇のp-クラッド層に横方向回折格子を設けた構造が提案された．この構造において，メサと横方向回折格子との間の領域の高さ/深さの効果について報告する．
