Keywords:liquid-crystalline elastomer, flexoelectric effect, splay

Mechanical responses to electric stimulation in a side-chain liquid-crystalline elastomer composed of cholesterol derivative mesogens were investigated. An electric-field-induced bend deformation was observed in the vicinity of the SmA-to-isotropic phase transition temperature. The polar response of the induced deformation, indicator existence of polarization. We speculate “flexoelectric effect” which is polarization induced by splay distortion.
