A positron emission tomography (PET) scanner with long axial field of view (FOV) can achieve high sensitivity. However, there is a problem of degraded spatial resolution in the axial direction if a conventional PET detectors are used. In this study, to investigate the effectiveness of the 4-layer depth-of-interaction detector, we develop a small prototype of a DOI-PET scanner with the FOV diameter of 12 cm and axial lendth of 30 cm. First, we evaluated the expected sensitivity by using Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation. The sensitivity against a cylindrical phantom with the diameter of 5 cm and the length of 30 cm was calculated. The result showed the DOI-PET scanner with long axial FOV can acheve 10 times higher sensitivity than a conventional small animal PET scanner.
