Gel based SERS substrate into which the plasmonic nanostructures are incorporated may be useful for the direct collection of biomarkers from secretions. However, there are very few reports on the diffusion of molecules through the gel and on the study of an appropriate gel for the SERS applications. We propose a gel based SERS sensor. We studied the diffusion of bipyridyl solution onto the Au nanoisland coated hydroxyethylcellulose gel as a function of time. Highly porous gel rapidly absorbed aqueous analyte solutions generating large SERS signal. Importantly the gel based SERS sensor does not significantly compromise the SERS performance. The proposed gel based sensor can be smeared directly onto the skin surface to absorb body fluids from th sweat enabling the detection of biomarkers.
