We report our results regarding the application of the Pauling's theory of the chemical bond to the bond energies measured at atomic scale by atomic force microsocpy. With the analysis based on the Pauling's theory, we found that we can discriminate the chemical identity of surface or tip atoms and also determine electronegativity of surface atoms. These results indicate that the Pauling's theory is widely applicable to the atomic-scale objects.
