A method of easily generating tunable ultrashort pulses in the vacuum ultraviolet region is required for spectroscopic applications such as time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and circular dichroism measurement of biomolecules. However, it is difficult to use conventional bulk nonlinear optical crystals. Here, we demonstrate that the third harmonic generation from a dielectric free-standing thin film with a thickness of several 100 nm (nanomembrane) is useful as a simple and practical method for generating vacuum ultraviolet coherent light.
