Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) ultrafast circularly polarized (CP) light sources are becoming important as probe light in time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and circular dichroism spectroscopy of biomolecules. Therefore, a method to generate coherent VUV CP light easily and practical intensity is required. In this study, we demonstrate that, when a femtosecond visible circularly polarized laser is incident on a square-latticed photonic crystal nanomembrane with four-fold rotational symmetry, the circularly polarized wavelength conversion into the VUV region is achieved due to the third harmonic generation.
