Optical unitary converter circuits, which enable arbitrary unitary operation in the optical domain, will be the key technology in realizing photonic programmable processors for deep-learning optical neural networks (ONNs), quantum computing, and so on.
In this paper, we study an integrated OUC based on multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) with multiport directional couplers and demonstrate its larger robustness and scalability compared with the conventional Clements scheme. As a unique property of the MPLC scheme, substantial coupling among all the ports is present at every layer, which provides required redundancy at large N without the need for extra phase shifters.
