Information processing using photonics for reservoir computing have been widely used to implement unconventional computing. We experimentally demonstrate reservoir computing scheme using a single semiconductor laser with optical delayed-feedback modulation to avoid using an external drive laser. We also investigate the dependence of transient response on phase and intensity modulation. We conduct a chaotic time-series prediction task and speech recognition task to evaluate the system performance. Our experiment results show that the phase modulation system provides good performance for reservoir computing when the feedback strength is adjusted near the edge of chaos. The signal to noise ratio is improved when using phase modulation.
