Irradiation with ionizing radiation for glasses induced generation of new luminescent centers. The photoluminescence from these luminescent centers is called radiophotoluminescence (RPL). As the intensity is proportional to the absorbed dose, materials exhibiting RPL are expected to be applied for dosimeters. In our laboratory, we discovered RPL phenomenon in Cu-doped silica glass prepared from porous silica glasses. In this presentation, we report changes of luminescence behavior due to irradiation with X-ray or gamma-ray of the Cu-doped silica glass. X-ray irradiation to Cu-doped silica glasses increased photoluminescence intensity around 2.1 eV. It seems that this luminescence is attributed to Cu+ dimer. The intensity increased proportionally with gamma-ray irradiation in the range of 200 ~ 2000 Gy.
