[11a-S202-3] Light confinement mechanism of solar-pumped laser using both total internal reflection and dielectric multilayer mirror

We have developed a new optical confinement method for solar-pumped fiber lasers. In the past, a liquid sensitizer was held in a case made of multilayer mirror, but reflectivity of p-polarization was not ideal. The new system is a solid disk dye that confines light by total internal reflection (TIR). Approximately 50% of fluorescence escapes out by solely TIR confinement, so we placed multilayer mirrors at both sides of the disk. The gain was doubled by this dual confinement mechanism and quadrupled when the side of the disk was covered with a diffuse reflection ring.
