Self-assembly monolayers (SAMs) have attracted considerable attention as interfacial thermal materials for various devices. Through a design of tripodal triptycene motif, we have recently succeeded in developing SAMs with high density and molecular orientation, as well as an ability of controlling the affinity with liquid molecules. In the present study, we fabricated several triptycene SAMs with different outermost surface groups on a gold substrate and measured their interfacial thermal resistances with water using time-domain thermoreflectance method. We found that SAMs with hydrophilic groups can significantly reduce interfacial thermal resistance.
